Interior & Renovation

2 posts

This is about what happens once you pass the exterior of the house and includes the tiling, flooring, color, and how much to renovate when original house elements exist that are aesthetically pleasing and valuable to the house.

When thinking about renovating, most people think about flooring first; it is the decision most likely to cause buyer’s remorse as it is the most expensive to remove. Floor coverage translates to a room’s overall style. For example, wood flooring covers everything from oak to engineered boards and laminates. Most of the time, people don’t even realize that there is a different price point and level of durability among the different options.

For renovating a house built in a different era, things get a little more complicated and is more about recognizing the options that complement what is already present rather than what the best of the modern options are. A Victorian Terrace and a Thatched Cottage are not going to have the same limitations, and the most common complaint about renovating is that people end up with a renovated home that unnecessarily opposes the character of the structure.

Colour and tiling are more of the decisions that are small and cost less, but will quickly become outdated and will end up being the first to go. Renovating and doing tiling properly means starting by removing the old tiles and going the extra mile to ensure not to damage what is behind them, which is what most attempts at a tiling DIY project fail to do.
